UK Government Unveils £700 Million EV Subsidy Package to Accelerate Transition
The UK Labour government is launching its most aggressive electric vehicle push since scrapping the plug-in grant in 2022. A £700 million subsidy package aims to offset purchase costs for consumers, while £63 million will fund charging infrastructure for homes without driveways.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed the measures this week, though declined to specify exact subsidy amounts. The initiative complements a separate £2.5 billion program supporting automakers' transition to zero-emission production.
Despite EVs costing twice their fuel-powered counterparts on average, Britain remains Europe's largest EV market. The new incentives target logistical barriers like charging access while maintaining momentum toward phasing out combustion engines.
